My involvement in trenchless industry standardization for various methods puts me in a unique position of possession of industry level cutting edge knowledge and best practices,
East Boston Branch Sewer
I was responsible for technical aspects of the Preliminary Design Report with respect to application of trenchless technology methods. Technical Manager responsible for design and preparation of construction contract documents. The project provided for a significant reduction in CSO into Boston Harbor by trenchless rehabilitation of the existing MWRA interceptor, and the trenchless installation of interceptor relief sewer in a highly urbanized area of Boston, MA. The project includes the installation of approximately 11,200 feet of 36, 48, and 66-inch relief sewer by microtunnel and the replacement of approximately 6,000 feet of various size pipe of the existing interceptor by pipe bursting. Construction bid cost was $80M. Project also included design and ESDC for cured-in-place pipe lining of approximately 5,400 feet of existing interceptor for the purpose of improving system hydraulics. Reviewed difficult technical during CIPP contract, issues encountered by contractor due to contractor means and methods and negotiated resolution favorable to MWRA.
Lake Austin Sanitary Force Main Crossing, Austin, TX
I prepared Feasibility Report on three options for a crossing under of Lake Austin in Austin, TX for a sanitary sewer force main or siphon to connect new annexed part of city of Austin, Texas to existing sewer system by horizontal directional drilling. Crossings were between 3,700 feet and 6,700 feet (depending on option) through limestone rock. The report including site evaluations, pipe stress calculations, geotechnical evaluation, preliminary cost estimates, and construction timeline schedules. Project construction completed successfully. The photo has become the prototype for bundles with spacers requiring thermal grouting.
Long Water Crossings
I provided feasibility study, and detailed engineering for 28,000 ft. horizontal directional drilling (HDD) Drill to install power transmission conduits under ecologically sensitive Hamlin Sound north of Charleston, SC. This project was an Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) type of delivery project.
HDD in urban environment
I provided feasibility study, detailed engineering and construction monitoring for 2,800 ft. horizontal directional drilling (HDD) Drill to install power transmission conduits under busy urban street in downtown Atlanta. This project was an Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) type of delivery project.
Crossing environmentally sensitive waterways
I served as Technical Manager for horizontal directional drilling project to install 17,400 feet of 138 kV Power Transmission Cable between Miami and Miami Beach under Biscayne Bay, an environmentally sensitive water body with technically challenging geology. Prepared routing study, assisted in environmental permitting, prepared contract documents, and providing construction services during construction
Outfall Pipe into river
I provided technical advice and monitoring of active microtunnel project for the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission. The project included microtunneling one 96-inch, and two 48-inch casing pipes under a US Army Corps of Engineers Flood Wall along the Connecticut River out falling into the river itself where it will connect to pipes crossing the river by conventional open trench across the river. The crossing also passes below two active Amtrak Commuter Rail tracks. A multi array remote reading ground movement program is being constantly monitored and adjustments made as needed to microtunnel operations. Additional services included review and approval of contractor pre- construction submittals.
About Me
Exceptional proven experience and subject matter expertise in Trenchless Technology. Adept at leading teams and devising strategic plans for diverse stakeholder requirements. Forward-thinking Program Management bringing a successful history of assisting organizations with identifying, conceptualizing, conducting detailed engineering, construction oversight, and risk management to produce safe, reliable, and sustainable horizontal underground infrastructure.
Veteran manager with deep understanding of everything from sales to operations. Inducted into the North American Society for Trenchless Technology Hall of Fame (Class of 2022) because of my involvement in trenchless industry in general and trenchless industry standardization, and my work on five different award-winning Trenchless Projects of the Year (4 microtunnel, 1 HDD), as well as several runner ups and honorable mentions. I am the founding member of the NASTT Northeast Chapter and started a student chapter in Trenchless Technology at UMass Lowell.
